In 1991, at the urging of Joe Viau, Jimmy Hicks jo In 1991, at the urging of Joe Viau, Jimmy Hicks joined the board of Newport Babe Ruth. He has been supporting the organization ever since through efforts like golf tournaments, team outings, and fundraisers—including the one held on June 7 at O’Brien’s.

Several current board members were recruited by Mr. Viau, and a few had children who played in the league. Now, those kids are old enough to join the board themselves. Lucas Woolhouse is the most recent addition. He’ll be working alongside Hicks, Chris Patsos, Kevin Carlos, and his father, Scott, who was elected in 2009 when Lucas began playing in the league.

Lucas said becoming a board member has given him a glimpse into the amount of work the board dedicates to the community. At one time, there were six teams from Newport. Today, the league also includes players from Middletown, Portsmouth, and Jamestown. Patsos said the board works hard to raise money to support players both on and off the field. Each year, they organize a field trip. Past trips have included visits to PC games, Yankee Stadium, and Faneuil Hall. This year, a WooSox game is in the works.

Three years ago, Newport Babe Ruth embraced the Newport County Challenger Baseball Club for kids with special needs. About 35 kids are currently playing, and Patsos said it’s a joy to get them on the field—whether they’re swinging Star Wars lightsabers in center field or fully engaged in the game. “They’re out there, and every now and again, they take a swing,” enthused Patsos.

On Sunday, the board attended the Rogers High banquet to present the Ann Galvin Scholarship. Usually, the $500 scholarship goes to one student, but with five Newport Babe Ruth alumni graduating, the board decided to allocate $250 to each student—provided they showed up. Patsos said he warned all of them, “If you don’t show up, you don’t get the money. Ninety percent of life is showing up.”

Jimmy Cranson shared that he was at the fundraiser because Patsos had always shown up for his son, Riley. “Chris continues to ask about Riley. He always asks everyone about their kids and how they’re doing. He looks after everyone,” said Cranson.

A 36-year-old Middletown man has died following a A 36-year-old Middletown man has died following a motorcycle crash on the Route 24 on-ramp in Portsmouth last week.

Juan Pablo Garcia Castro was critically injured around 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, when his motorcycle struck a guardrail near the northbound on-ramp from West Main Road, police said Tuesday.

According to investigators, Garcia Castro was riding north on West Main Road and entered the on-ramp using the left lane. As he navigated the curve, he reportedly changed lanes and hit the guardrail, which caused him to be thrown from the motorcycle. The bike continued for a short distance before coming to a stop.

Garcia Castro was wearing a helmet, police said, but was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. He was taken to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River and later airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he died from his injuries on Monday, June 9.

The crash remains under investigation by the Portsmouth Police Detective Division and Accident Reconstruction Unit.

Authorities closed the on-ramp after the crash to allow first responders to assist at the scene and begin their investigation.

Police offered condolences to Garcia Castro’s family and friends.

A Massachusetts man is facing DUI charges after st A Massachusetts man is facing DUI charges after striking a curb so hard it disabled his vehicle Saturday night — with two young children inside.

Portsmouth Police say they responded to East Main Road near Hedly Street around 8:30 p.m. on June 7 for a report of a disabled vehicle. Officers found 39-year-old Peter Murner of Bourne, Mass., at the scene along with his damaged car.

Authorities said a 10-year-old child who had been in the vehicle approached officers and handed over the car keys. A 7-year-old child remained in the back seat. Both children were safely moved to a cruiser as officers investigated.

Police said Murner showed multiple signs of alcohol impairment, including slurred speech and the smell of alcohol. He failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody.

At police headquarters, Murner refused to take a chemical breath test.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol with passengers under 13 years old and refusal to submit to a chemical test. He was released with a summons and is scheduled to be arraigned in 2nd Division District Court on June 12.

The children were released into the care of a family member.
