A late-night fire tore through Castle Hill Inn on A late-night fire tore through Castle Hill Inn on Thursday, forcing an evacuation and drawing firefighters from across Rhode Island as crews battled flames amid icy, bitter conditions.

At 9:33 p.m., the Newport Fire Department was dispatched to 590 Ocean Ave. after a fire alarm activation. When crews arrived, smoke and fire were already pushing through the roof at the rear of the historic seaside property.

Firefighters immediately evacuated all guests and occupants while attack teams raced inside to conduct primary and secondary searches. Crews launched an aggressive interior attack on the third floor and attic, where the fire was concentrated.

As the blaze intensified, a second alarm was struck at 9:56 p.m., triggering a regional response. Mutual aid companies from Newport Naval Station, Jamestown, Middletown, Portsmouth, North Kingstown, Bristol and Kingston responded, along with the Providence Canteen to support firefighters on scene and provide coverage across the community.

After more than two hours of coordinated firefighting, the fire was declared under control at 12:08 a.m. Investigators from the Newport Fire Marshal’s Office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office then began examining the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Mutual aid departments were gradually released starting around 12:40 a.m., while Newport firefighters remained on scene through the morning to assist investigators and monitor for lingering hot spots.
Hotel management was able to accommodate all displaced guests on the property. No estimates were immediately available on the extent of fire, smoke or water damage.

Despite freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions, officials reported no injuries.

The New England Patriots’ stunning turnaround seas The New England Patriots’ stunning turnaround season received a defining moment Thursday night when head coach Mike Vrabel was named NFL Coach of the Year at NFL Honors.

In his first season in Foxborough, Vrabel engineered one of the most dramatic one-year revivals in league history. The Patriots jumped from back-to-back 4–13 seasons to a 14–3 record, tying for the best mark in the NFL and matching the largest single-season win improvement ever at plus-10.

Vrabel became the first Patriots coach to win the award since Bill Belichick in 2010 and just the 14th coach in NFL history to claim Coach of the Year honors multiple times, having previously won in 2021 with Tennessee.

The turnaround extended well beyond the standings. New England went a perfect 9–0 on the road, including the playoffs, becoming the first team in league history to do so. The Patriots also reclaimed the AFC East title for the first time since 2019 and now stand one win away from a championship.

Known for his CEO-style approach, Vrabel left his imprint across every phase of the team. He emphasized discipline, situational football and game management, helping the Patriots rank among the league’s least penalized teams while consistently making effective fourth-down and clock-management decisions.

Vrabel’s leadership was also central to the emergence of quarterback Drake Maye, who blossomed into an MVP candidate in his second season. Vrabel challenged the young quarterback to grow as a leader and elevate his performance in critical moments, a push that paid dividends throughout the year.

The Patriots’ resurgence has carried them to Super Bowl LX, where they will face the Seattle Seahawks.

If New England finishes the job, Vrabel would become one of the few coaches in NFL history to win a Super Bowl in his first season with a team, cementing a debut year that already ranks among the most impressive the league has seen.
