Newport residents and visitors will have the opportunity to climb to the top of the city’s highest point this Memorial Day. The Miantonomi Park Memorial Tower, a historic landmark honoring World War I veterans, will open to the public on Monday, May 26, from 12 to 3 p.m.
The event is organized by the City of Newport, the Miantonomi Park Commission, and the Aquidneck Land Trust, and is designed to recognize the tower’s significant role as a memorial. Completed in 1929, the 100-foot tower was designed by William Kendall of the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. It stands proudly atop one of Newport’s highest points, offering panoramic views of the surrounding region.
The climb to the top involves navigating a series of stone steps leading to a narrow metal staircase that reaches the observation deck. Visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras to capture the breathtaking views, which on clear days can extend to Providence and Block Island.
The event is open to adults and families, but children must be accompanied by an adult. This Memorial Day tradition allows the public to enjoy not only the historical significance of the tower but also the stunning vistas it offers.
Don’t miss the chance to experience Newport from a new height this Memorial Day. All are welcome to climb, reflect, and enjoy the view.
