NOAA Warns of Above-Normal 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is forecasting a major 2025 Atlantic hurricane season with a 60% chance of above-normal activity.

The season, running from June 1 to November 30, could see between 13 to 19 named storms, with 6-10 expected to become hurricanes and 3-5 predicted to reach major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher).

According to NOAA’s outlook, the forecast is heavily influenced by several factors, including warmer-than-average ocean temperatures, weak wind shear, and the potential for increased activity from the West African Monsoon. These conditions are prime for fueling tropical storm formation and driving high-intensity hurricanes.

The agency’s prediction comes with a 70% confidence level, highlighting the advanced models and real-time storm tracking tools that are now at the disposal of forecasters. NOAA’s Acting Administrator Laura Grimm emphasized that, like last year’s destructive hurricanes Helene and Debby, these storms won’t just impact coastal areas—flooding and severe weather can reach inland, too.

“NOAA’s advanced forecasting tools provide us with the most accurate storm predictions to date, but it’s up to all of us to take these warnings seriously,” said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. “We’ve never been more prepared for hurricane season.”

For many, the season’s outlook signals a call to action. Ken Graham, NOAA’s National Weather Service Director, urges everyone to start preparing now—gather supplies, create an emergency plan, and stay informed as the season progresses.

With the Atlantic continuing to be a hotbed for hurricane activity, the time to prepare for potential storms is now. “This is no time for complacency,” warned Graham. “Make sure you’re ready before the first storm hits.”
