In a big shake-up for Rhode Island’s cannabis la In a big shake-up for Rhode Island’s cannabis landscape, local entrepreneur Octavius Prince has officially taken over the Greenleaf Compassion Center and relaunched it under a new name and vision — Newport Cannabis Company (@newportcannaco).

Prince, a fifth-generation Newporter, is no stranger to the industry. He’s the founder of Hangar 420, Rhode Island’s leading cultivator, and has built a strong reputation for quality and consistency since adult-use sales launched in late 2022.

His journey into the field started with a personal story: seeing how the plant helped a loved one during a serious illness. “It became clear this plant had real power — not just medically, but emotionally and spiritually,” he said. “That’s why I started Hangar 420, and that’s why I’m bringing that same energy and commitment to Newport Cannabis Company.”

The new vision? To revitalize a once-bustling space and create something rooted in local values. “This isn’t just a rebrand — it’s a full reset,” Prince said. “We’re revamping the experience, retraining staff, and building something that reflects the needs of this community.”

He added, “For too long, island residents have had to go elsewhere to find what they were looking for. That ends now.”

Newport Cannabis Company is officially open — built by a Newporter, for Rhode Islanders.

For one glorious, caffeine-fueled day, the town of For one glorious, caffeine-fueled day, the town of Stow, Massachusetts will officially be known as… Dunkin’.

Yes, really.

On July 24, in celebration of the grand opening of a new Dunkin’ store at 108 Great Road, the Stow Select Board unanimously voted to temporarily change the town’s name to honor the return of the state’s unofficial fuel source. That’s right — the “Dunkin’ Desert” has finally been quenched.

If you’re wondering how a town in Massachusetts survived two whole years without a Dunkin’, the short answer is… they didn’t. After the town’s only two locations closed within 30 days of each other back in 2022, residents spiraled into full-on iced-coffee withdrawal. WBZ’s Matt Shearer documented the horror in a now-viral TikTok, coining the term “Dunkin’ Desert.”

Franchisees Megan and Mark Pesce decided enough was enough.

“As soon as we heard the two stores in Stow had closed, we wanted to fix that,” Megan told the Select Board. And fix it they did. The new location — on the site of the long-shuttered Beef ‘N Ale — will open its doors with the kind of fanfare that would make any Masshole proud.

There’ll be a ribbon cutting (11 a.m.), 100 days of free coffee for the first 100 Dunkin’ Rewards members in line, a Dunkin’ Desert gallery wall unveiling, and even a $5,000 check presentation to the Stow Food Pantry. Dunkin’s mascot Cuppy might even get handed a ceremonial key to the town. Because obviously.

Select Board member Dan Petersen summed it up best: “I have friends who moved to California who were literally praying for us. So I think those prayers have been answered.”

No word yet on whether Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will be in attendance — but if they show up in matching Sox caps and order a medium regular, we won’t be surprised.

Stow is out. Dunkin’ is in. At least for a day. And honestly? That’s the most Massachusetts thing we’ve ever heard.
