The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced a new $12.7 million project to repair five bridges along I-95 in Providence. This bridge preservation project will address a number of bridge deficiencies and maintenance issues, including painting.
One of the first phases of the project involves work on the Eddy Street Bridge, which carries I-95 over Eddy Street near the I-195 interchange and the Rhode Island Hospital campus. RIDOT will implement a left lane shift on the bridge starting on Friday, November 15 for I-95 South only. Lane closures are likely Friday night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to set up the new traffic pattern.
The left lane shift will be in place until Spring 2020, when lanes shift to the right. The lane shifts will be in place through the 2020 construction season.
This bridge carries more than 167,000 vehicles per day and is one of the busiest stretches of highway in Providence. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously through the work zone.
Also as part of this project, RIDOT will work on four bridge overpasses between I-195 and Exit 22 (Downtown, Routes 6/10). These include the Broad Street, Westminster Street, Washington Street and Broadway overpasses. Work on the bridges include full deck replacements for the Broadway and Broad Street bridges. Other work includes concrete repairs, concrete sealing, deck joint repair/replacement, steel beam repair, deck underside repairs and painting.
No full closures of these overpasses are planned, but lane closures are likely. None are scheduled to take place until next year, and RIDOT will announce traffic pattern changes well in advance.
All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.
