The U.S. Naval War College (NWC) wrapped up its fourth annual Adm. James R. Hogg Cyber and Innovation Policy Institute (CIPI) Summer Workshop last week, drawing academics, military leaders, and government officials to Newport, R.I., for a deep dive into the future of cyber warfare.
Held May 28–30 at Naval Station Newport, this year’s workshop—titled “CYBERCOM.Next”—focused on emerging technologies, military innovation, and the evolving mission of U.S. Cyber Command (CYBERCOM).
Anne Marie Schumann, the Department of the Navy’s Principal Cyber Advisor, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the need for speed and adaptability in cyberspace operations.
“As the threat landscape continues to evolve, the Department of Defense must remain agile and proactive in outpacing our adversaries,” Schumann said.
The three-day event combined analytical wargames, panel discussions, and policy debates to examine how the U.S. military can better generate and employ cyber forces in an increasingly competitive global environment.
Professor Frank L. Smith III, director of CIPI, led discussions on training, readiness, and command structures, aiming to help shape future policy.
“From training and readiness to command and control, the Navy and the Joint Force need critical analysis and creative solutions,” said Smith.
The workshop also included contributions from students in CIPI’s Gravely advanced research program and external subject matter experts, producing actionable recommendations for national security leaders.
Findings from the event will be published in several industry publications in the coming months.
CIPI, based at NWC, remains a premier center for cyber strategy and innovation, tackling issues ranging from artificial intelligence and autonomous systems to cyber security practices and future warfare technologies.
