Culinary trend chasers can be quick to dismiss a s Culinary trend chasers can be quick to dismiss a self-proclaimed “family restaurant.” But an icon like @nikolaspizza, a staple in Newport for nearly half a century, delivers a special brand of local charm that’s hard to match, and a scratch-made, something for everyone formula. A brand-new menu retains the standard Italian favorites and Greek pizza the place is known for, adding additional Aegean inspired dishes, deals and specials, cocktails and wine, vegetarian options, party food and catering. The energy at Nikolas is homey, warm, with a welcoming and chipper staff. Recent renovations have created a refreshed, brighter and more spacious dining room. On a recent visit, four of us sampled a gorgeous, colorful Greek salad served in brightly painted pottery dishes, popping with crisp, minty-green Romaine, feta cheese, Greek olives, juicy tomatoes, emerald-green peppers and slivers of purple red onion, with a tart, balanced, oregano-laced vinaigrette. Salad bliss. You’d swear the Filet-o-Chick chicken sandwich, breaded, served with mayo and pickles on a brioche bun, was teleported from you-know-where. A heaping plate of linguine frutti di mare comes loaded with calamari, shrimp, mussels vinegar peppers and olives. A pizza with creamy goat cheese, chewy-crisp, salty prosciutto, sweet fig, and Balsamic drizzle was unforgettable. The chewy, Greek style dough is the perfect foil for this sweet and salty pie. Additional Greek specialties now available include Gyros, Saganaki, Dolmathes, spinach pies, and Avgolemono, a lemony, egg drop style chicken noodle soup. There are wings, skins, mozz sticks and onion rings, grinders, pizza and calzones. For Mom, eggplant parm, Dad, lasagna. This week, Nikolas brought back its 50% off, Mon-Wed dine-in special, offering a limited but varied menu of some of the most popular dishes, all served at half price. This, a 15% discount for Salve students, and large pie plus a dozen wings deal, make Nikolas a family restaurant where everyone’s part of the family. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), al U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), along with multiple federal partners, arrested 1,461 unlawfully present individuals across Massachusetts in May during Operation Patriot, a large-scale enforcement effort targeting dangerous noncitizens linked to gangs, violent crimes, and transnational criminal organizations. The multi-agency operation included the FBI, U.S. Marshals, CBP, ATF, Coast Guard, and others. ICE said more than half of those arrested had serious criminal records in the U.S. or abroad, including 790 with criminal charges or convictions. Another 277 had previously been ordered removed but failed to leave the country. “This operation removed some of the most dangerous individuals from our communities — murderers, rapists, child predators, and gang members,” said ICE Boston Acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde. Among the notable arrests: * * * A 55-year-old Salvadoran national wanted for homicide, kidnapping, and robbery in El Salvador. Arrested in Lynn. * * * A 32-year-old Guatemalan sex offender facing charges in Boston for aggravated rape of a child and sexual servitude. Local detainers were ignored. * * * A 37-year-old Honduran with charges including rape, kidnapping of a minor, and multiple DUI convictions. Arrested in Fall River. * * * A 45-year-old Guatemalan national convicted of murder in Boston, sentenced to life in prison. * * * A 29-year-old Brazilian national charged with aggravated rape of a child, child pornography, and kidnapping. Arrested in Edgartown. * * * A 32-year-old Brazilian wanted by Interpol for drug trafficking. Fled from Brazilian police, throwing cocaine during the chase. * * * A 24-year-old Brazilian also wanted by Interpol for murder. Nearly 40 arrests were made on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, including a child predator and a violent gang member. Many arrests followed local jurisdictions’ refusal to honor ICE detainer requests. All individuals remain in ICE custody pending removal or further legal proceedings. #ice #operationpatriot #massachusetts #newportbuzz
