Sunday, June 15, is Father’s Day, and whether yo Sunday, June 15, is Father’s Day, and whether you’re looking to celebrate a grill master, put him on duty, or send in a sub, Aquidneck Island’s got you.

Newport is full of Dad-friendly spots, starting with @diegosnewport, where every Saturday and Sunday they serve up a serious Mexican-inspired brunch, with hearty dishes like spicy duck hash or steak and eggs, overstuffed breakfast burritos, nitro cart iced coffee, and killer cocktails. FD Bonus: Dad gets an order of guacamole and chips on the house.

Across the way is @wharfsouthernkitchen, set right on the wharf with a spacious patio—perfect for al fresco dining, top-tier people-watching, and a slew of Southern favorites like chicken and waffles, BBQ pork mac and cheese, and Creole shrimp and grits. Or, head to @thequenchernewport at the north end of the harbor to take in the water view, live music from 2–5 p.m., red sauce–themed Italian favorites, and one of the best burgers in town.

Got grandparents in tow? Spruce everyone up for a table at @scalesandshellsnpt (outdoor tables are dog-friendly) and enjoy a seafood-based repast of raw bar, seafood pastas, crab and lobster rolls, and more.

Take your pop to the beach or to Fort Adams for an elevated picnic with a haul of @bottegabocconi’s classic flatbread piadine—Romagna-style sandwiches filled with imported Italian meats, cheeses, and fresh veggies.

For a tong takeover, a dry rub of fragrant herbs brings out the meaty richness in a grilled steak. If you’re going to buy red meat, you might as well buy the good stuff from @patspastured or @aquidneck_farms, both selling at our Wednesday and Saturday Farmers Markets.

Outside of the Pacific Northwest, I’ve yet to sample a salmon filet as tasty as the Scottish Wester Ross available at @anthonys_seafood. I’ve got a fab, foolproof grilling recipe for you—with a glaze to go with it.

Finally, if only the best will do for Father, @newportlobstershack on Long Wharf has crustaceans caught that morning by the lobstermen owners.

Happy Father’s Day to all. (Recipes and full story: link in bio.)

In a touching ceremony at Citizens’ historic Gar In a touching ceremony at Citizens’ historic Gardner House branch in Newport — the oldest continuously operating banking office in the country — CEO Bruce Van Saun honored Barbara Varone, the bank’s longest-serving employee, for her 54 years of dedicated service.

Van Saun presented Varone with a commemorative credit card bearing her name, a symbolic tribute to her legacy. In a first for the bank, Barbara’s name will appear on all marketing materials for an upcoming Citizens credit card launch.

Barbara, who began her banking career in 1970 at the Fairlawn branch in Pawtucket, now works part-time at the Newport branch, just steps from her home. Over five decades, she’s seen banking evolve from paper checks to online platforms — and embraced every change with grace and humor.

“I love my customers, they love me,” Varone said. “If someone comes in with a problem, I love that I can help them. I get rewarded by finding solutions.”

Her secret? “Listening to them,” she said, a practice that’s helped build generations of loyal customers — many who now bring their children back to see her.

Barbara has also left a mark on her colleagues. Citizens Regional Manager Alex Restrepo recalled being in her teller training class in 2006. “Barbara made 80 hours of training fun and exciting. She helped calm our nerves with her charm and stories,” he said.

Barbara’s annual work anniversary each September brings a flood of calls, messages, and visits from coworkers past and present — all expressing gratitude for her guidance and kindness.

“Barbara embodies our Credo,” said Nuno Dos Santos, Head of Retail. “She’s always built meaningful relationships. It’s fitting her name will be on a card designed to connect with our customers.”

After more than 800 days of battling cancer, 8-yea After more than 800 days of battling cancer, 8-year-old Grant Dion received a hero’s welcome Monday as he marked the end of his treatment at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

The Portsmouth Police Department led a celebratory motorcade escorting Grant from the hospital to Saint Philomena School of the Sacred Heart, where classmates, teachers, and staff greeted him with cheers, bells, and heartfelt applause.

“Prayers answered!” the school posted on Instagram. “As a community, we’ve been praying for Grant since he began his fight with childhood cancer in the spring of 2023. We are truly overjoyed with his family that he can celebrate the completion of his treatment!”

The celebration was made possible with the help of Enzo’s Escorts, local police and fire departments, and dozens of well-wishers who came out to show support.

The Portsmouth Police Department echoed the sentiment on social media: “We were proud to stand with his family, our law enforcement partners, and the greater community in recognizing Grant’s journey. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day memorable for Grant and his loved ones.”

Though Grant’s treatment has ended, the prayers from his school community continue. “We will be forever grateful that God led him through his treatment,” the school shared.
