Newport couldn’t quit Jake Gyllenhaal on Wednesd Newport couldn’t quit Jake Gyllenhaal on Wednesday.

Jake Gyllenhaal brought star power — and a heatwave — to Newport on Wednesday as he filmed scenes for ‘Remain’, a new romantic thriller from director M. Night Shyamalan and author Nicholas Sparks.

Crowds packed Lower Broadway and Washington Square as temperatures soared into the 90s with heavy humidity. Fans gathered outside @tavernonbroadway, @bar12newport, @getthescoopnewport, and @stoneacrebrasserie to watch the Hollywood production unfold just feet away.

Despite the scorching weather, spirits were high as onlookers caught glimpses of Gyllenhaal in action. The production brought a buzz to the historic downtown, with film trucks, cameras, and crew members taking over the streets from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Remain is described as a hauntingly romantic supernatural thriller. Gyllenhaal plays Tate Donovan, a grieving New York architect who retreats to Cape Cod following the loss of his sister and a stay in a psychiatric facility. There, he meets Wren (Phoebe Dynevor), a mysterious woman who challenges his sense of reality and leads him into a world where love and the afterlife intersect.

The film, co-written by Sparks and Shyamalan, explores themes of grief, connection, and whether love can transcend death. It’s currently scheduled for release in October 2026.

Gyllenhaal, for the record, kept his cool. But Newport? Totally possessed.

@matunuckoysterbar is making a comeback. Just wee @matunuckoysterbar is making a comeback.

Just weeks after a fire devastated its flagship waterfront restaurant in South Kingstown, the popular destination will reopen for outdoor dining next week. A soft opening is set for Monday, June 30, with full service beginning Tuesday, July 1—marking the restaurant’s 16th anniversary.

Final approval from the South Kingstown Town Council paved the way for the temporary setup in the Matunuck Marina parking lot, directly across from the original location at 650 Succotash Road. A large tented dining area has been constructed to accommodate guests for tableside service and grab-and-go meals. Hours will run daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and reservations and takeout can be made at RhodyOysters.com.

“We are incredibly grateful to our municipal and state leaders for their partnership in helping us execute this plan,” said owner Perry Raso in a statement. “This outdoor dining space will allow us to welcome guests back this summer, as well as keep many of our valued team members employed.”

The May fire caused widespread interior damage, forcing the seasonal favorite to close during the start of Rhode Island’s busy coastal season. While repairs to the main building continue, the new marina-based setup offers a creative solution to keep operations going and meet ongoing demand.

“We sincerely appreciate the overwhelming support from our community,” Raso said. “We look forward to seeing you under the Matunuck Oyster Bar tent.”
