Buzzing Around Newport: A Friendly Match Up at Fort Adams

Competition was fierce at the Joseph “Jay” Kirwin Memorial Rugby Pitch on May 3 as 16 teams from the East Coast vied for a spot in the USA Rugby Final Fours, moving on from the Atlantic Super Regionals. Eight of the top women’s and men’s teams will advance to Sunday’s matches. Play begins at 9 a.m. at Fort Adams State Park. Concessions featuring Narragansett Beer, burgers, hot dogs, and more from the grill offer the complete Sunday Funday package.

Although the Newport Rugby Football Club did not qualify for the tournament, they enjoyed a friendly match against the South Shore Anchors. On the sidelines, “Old Boys” Mike Behan, Ron Smith, Jack Kliever, Mike Martin Jr., and Wick Rudd were there offering encouragement. Club founder Chris Behan kept a watchful eye on the refs, attempting to keep them in check. Freddie Hicks received numerous shout-outs for his commitment and intensity on the field.

Team captain Anthony Kennedy thanked the Quincy-based team for giving NRFC the opportunity to play on such a beautiful day by the water. Kennedy acknowledged that while both teams played similar styles, the South Shore Anchors “did it better,” before naming Kyle Hering and Garrett Behan as Newport’s Men of the Match at the post-game celebration.
