More than five decades after stepping into the rol More than five decades after stepping into the role of Nick Carraway in the 1974 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, Sam Waterston will return to Rosecliff, the Gilded Age mansion that once served as the backdrop for Jay Gatsby’s lavish soirées.

The celebrated actor will appear Wednesday, July 9, as the featured guest in the Preservation Society of Newport County’s Summer Lecture Series. Titled “The Great Gatsby” Revisited: An Evening with Sam Waterston, the event marks the annual David B. Ford Family Lecture and will be moderated by NBC News correspondent Anne Thompson.

The evening begins with a cocktail reception on the Rosecliff lawn, recalling the grandeur of the film’s iconic party scenes, followed by a moderated conversation in the mansion’s historic ballroom. Waterston will reflect on his portrayal of Carraway—the novel’s introspective narrator—and the experience of filming at Newport landmarks including Rosecliff and Marble House.

“Nick Carraway is the moral compass in The Great Gatsby,” said Trudy Coxe, CEO of the @newport.manstions. “He is captivated by the flamboyant lifestyles of those around him but provides a grounded perspective compared to their moral ambiguity.”

Waterston, now 83, has enjoyed a distinguished career across stage and screen. Best known for his role as District Attorney Jack McCoy on Law & Order and more recently as Sol Bergstein in Grace and Frankie, Waterston has also portrayed King Lear, Hamlet, and Abraham Lincoln. He earned an Academy Award nomination for The Killing Fields and holds Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG honors.

Thompson, a veteran journalist and NBC’s Chief Environmental Affairs Correspondent, brings decades of reporting experience to the conversation, including coverage of presidential campaigns, economic crises, and the environment.

Tickets for the reception and program are $250. Dinner seating is nearly sold out. For more details, visit the Preservation Society’s website.

The Northeast’s premier luxury yacht trade show The Northeast’s premier luxury yacht trade show is back, as the @newportchartershow docks at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard from June 23-27. This exclusive event brings together charter yachts, brokers, captains, and crews for three days of networking, tours, and competition, all aimed at elevating the yacht charter experience.

Eighteen yachts—including the 170’ Lady B and 169’ ACTA—will be on display for brokers seeking high-end charter options for discerning clients. “The Newport show is more intimate and relaxed than other major charter events,” said Sarah Egger of Fraser Yachts. “It allows brokers to really connect with the crew and explore each vessel.”

In addition to motor yachts like Lady B and Fraser’s 110’ In the Zone, the show will feature three sailing yachts from Nicholson Yachts, including the newly launched 68’ Cirrus.

Beyond the docks, the schedule is packed with events, including crew competitions like the Best Charter Yacht Chef and the popular Yacht Hop party contest. The show also offers seminars on charter trends, cybersecurity, and cruising destinations like Turkey and New England.

A highlight of the week is the AYCA breakfast aboard the 85’ Lexington and a morning seminar on June 26. Vendors will be open to the public on the “checkerboard patio” from June 24-26, offering marine and lifestyle goods.

Capping off the week, the 12th Annual Newport Yacht Rendezvous on Friday, June 27, will raise funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, blending glamour with goodwill.

From luxury tours to industry insights and local impact, the Newport Charter Yacht Show remains the Northeast’s essential summer yachting event.

Call off the search! After 250 years and a whole l Call off the search! After 250 years and a whole lot of debate, the legendary ship Endeavour — yes, the one Captain James Cook sailed to Australia in 1770 — has officially been identified at the bottom of Newport Harbor.

The Australian National Maritime Museum just released its final report after 25 years of research, confirming that the wreck known as RI 2394 is, without a doubt, the Endeavour.

The ship began its life as the Earl of Pembroke, was renamed Endeavour for Cook’s famous voyage, then sold off and renamed Lord Sandwich. In 1778, the British deliberately sank it in Newport during the American Revolution to help block French forces from entering Narragansett Bay.

Researchers have spent decades combing through archives, diving into the harbor, and analyzing every inch of the wreck — from its white oak hull to repair marks that matched original ship plans.

The museum made a big announcement in 2022, but some U.S. archaeologists pushed back, calling it “premature.” Now, the Aussies have doubled down with the final word.

“It has involved underwater investigation in the US and extensive research in institutions across the globe,” said museum director Daryl Karp. “This final report marks our definitive statement on the project.”

Not just a pile of old wood — this wreck is a lightning rod of history. Some see it as a symbol of the Age of Discovery. Others, of colonization and cultural destruction.

The museum acknowledged both sides of that legacy in its report.

Now comes the hard part: saving what’s left. Marine organisms are eating away at the wreck, and preservation efforts are urgently needed.

But now it’s official: the Endeavour rests beneath Newport Harbor — a vessel of immense historical significance that’s been lying unnoticed for centuries.
