Rhode Island is buzzing with concern as health off Rhode Island is buzzing with concern as health officials confirm the state’s first human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus this year. The patient, a Providence County resident in their 70s, marks the first EEE infection in the state since 2019—and the 11th since 1983. But that’s not all. The Department of Health also announced two probable cases of West Nile Virus (WNV), with one confirmed by the CDC. The latest WNV case involves a Newport County resident in their 60s. “This is serious business,” warns RIDOH Director Jerome Larkin, MD, urging Rhode Islanders to ramp up their defenses against the bloodsucking pests. “We’re seeing more cases pop up not just here, but across Massachusetts and Connecticut. Now’s the time to protect yourself.” Health officials are practically begging residents to avoid the outdoors at sunrise and sunset—prime mosquito time. Todd Morgan Beamer, 32, was a passenger on United Todd Morgan Beamer, 32, was a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 during the September 11, 2001 attacks. When hijackers took control of the plane, Beamer, along with other passengers, made a heroic attempt to reclaim the aircraft. During the struggle, the plane lost control and crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Though all on board were killed, their bravery is believed to have prevented a larger catastrophe by stopping the hijackers from reaching their intended target. Beamer is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their children, David and Andrew, who were just three and one years old at the time of his death. His daughter, Morgan, was born after the tragedy. On September 20, 2001, President George W. Bush addressed a joint session of Congress and the American people, highlighting the courage of the passengers on Flight 93. He specifically honored Beamer, calling him “an exceptional man.” In a later address on November 8 from Atlanta, Bush invoked Beamer’s iconic last words, “Let’s roll,” as a symbol of American courage. Gould, a beloved son of the city and a member of the Rogers High School Class of 1990. After graduating from Rogers High School, Mike continued his education at Villanova University, where he pursued his passion for business. His career ambitions led him to Cantor Fitzgerald, a prestigious financial firm in New York City, where he worked as a securities trader. Tragically, Mike was one of the many lives lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. As Newport reflects on the events of that fateful day, the memory of Michael Gould stands as a reminder of the countless lives touched by kindness, generosity, and love—a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the light of those we lose continues to shine. This new “water tax,” as some residents have dubbed it, has blindsided Newporters, especially seniors and those on fixed incomes who are already feeling the squeeze. With bills surging and wallets shrinking, many are asking if the Newport City Council even understands the financial strain their policies are causing. Making matters worse, that $81 fee doesn’t even cover the whole bill. Residents are hit with an additional $19.20 billing fee, a combined sewer overflow fee, and the actual water usage cost. Alan Shawn Feinstein, a beloved philanthropist and Alan Shawn Feinstein, a beloved philanthropist and champion for kindness and education, has passed away at the age of 93. Feinstein was the driving force behind the Feinstein Foundation, which he founded in 1991 with a mission to encourage young people to perform good deeds and help those in need. Through his leadership program, more than 600,000 children were recognized as “Feinstein Junior Scholars,” leaving an indelible mark on schools and communities throughout Rhode Island and beyond. Feinstein’s commitment to philanthropy was rooted in his belief that small acts of kindness can create lasting change. He dedicated millions to education and community service, and his efforts earned him numerous awards and honorary degrees from universities and organizations across the region. His influence extended to schools named in his honor, and his legacy will continue through the many students and families he inspired to make a difference. A teacher at heart, Feinstein believed deeply in the power of education and compassion. His passing is a great loss to the community, but his work will live on in the values he instilled in so many. Funeral services will be held on September 21 at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence. Burial will be private. After months of care at the New England Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy, three critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles were released back into the ocean Thursday. The turtles, named Foxglove, Peony, and Marigold, had been recovering from the effects of cold-stunning after being stranded off the Cape Cod coast last December. Suffering from hypothermia-related conditions like pneumonia, dehydration, and weight loss, the turtles were rescued and brought to the hospital for treatment. Cold-stunning occurs when sea turtles are exposed to water temperatures below 50°F, leaving them unable to regulate their body temperature. “It’s always rewarding to see them head back to the ocean,” said Linda Lory, Rescue and Rehabilitation Manager at the aquarium. “Our team works hard to get these turtles healthy and back where they belong.” The release marks the final step in the aquarium’s efforts for the 2023 cold-stunning season, during which 394 sea turtles were rescued and treated after being found on the shores of Cape Cod by volunteers from Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles are one of the most endangered sea turtle species, facing threats from fishing activities, habitat loss, and pollution. Rehabilitation efforts like those at the Sea Turtle Hospital are part of a broader conservation effort to protect these animals.
