The countdown to one of the world’s most iconic The countdown to one of the world’s most iconic ocean races begins this week as the Bermuda Race Organizing Committee opens entries for the 2026 Newport Bermuda Race on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. EDT—exactly one year ahead of its start.

The 2026 edition will mark 120 years since the race’s founding in 1906 and commemorate a century of partnership between the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, co-organizers of the historic 636-nautical-mile race.

“The Newport Bermuda Race is not only a test of seamanship and preparation—it’s a celebration of what makes offshore sailing so meaningful,” said returning Race Chair Andrew Kallfelz. “2026 will honor the race’s extraordinary history while engaging sailors and fans across the globe.”

Building on the success of the 2024 starting location, the race will once again begin off Fort Adams State Park in Newport, transforming the launch into the “Newport Bermuda Race Starting Line Festival.” The 2024 event welcomed more than 4,000 spectators with food trucks, music, exhibits, and family activities, and drew over 25,000 online viewers. Organizers expect even larger crowds in 2026.

Interest is already high on both sides of the Atlantic. Mallorca-based Swan 56 Azaha has confirmed participation, while 2024 runner-up Hound is preparing for a rematch after a close finish last year.

The race draws a wide range of competitors across divisions, including the St. David’s Lighthouse, Gibbs Hill, Finisterre (cruising), and Open classes.

Maj. Kyle Key of the Arizona Army National Guard g Maj. Kyle Key of the Arizona Army National Guard graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval War College on June 13, capping off a milestone week that also saw him honored by President Donald Trump at the U.S. Army’s 250th Birthday Celebration.

Key completed the College of Naval Command and Staff program in Newport, Rhode Island, a rigorous academic track preparing senior military officers for high-level strategic leadership. He is also pursuing a Master of Arts in Strategic Defense Studies.

Just three days earlier, Key and his family were invited guests of President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth at a ceremony at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Trump praised the Army’s history and paid special tribute to Key—an eighth-generation descendant of Francis Scott Key, author of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

“Eight generations later, we’re joined by a descendant of Francis Scott Key, who has spent two decades in uniform, Major Kyle Key of Army National Guard fame,” Trump said. “Thank you for helping keep this incredible land of ours free.”

The celebration included a powerful retelling of the defense of Fort McHenry and honored military families for their service across generations.

Key, a Mesa, Arizona, resident and father of four, currently serves as Marketing Manager for the Army National Guard in Arlington, Virginia. He previously led public affairs efforts for the Arizona National Guard and commanded the 123rd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment in Phoenix.

“Being included in the Army’s 250th Birthday Celebration and graduating from the Naval War College in the same week is an incredible honor,” Key said. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

A new chapter is about to unfold on one of Newport A new chapter is about to unfold on one of Newport’s most storied streets. Procaccianti Companies has officially received all necessary approvals to move forward with the development of The Bellevue Hotel, a 91-room luxury boutique property inspired by the city’s historic grandeur.

The unanimous approval came from Newport’s Technical Review Committee on June 11, capping off a multi-phase approval process that included endorsements from the Zoning Board of Review and the Historic District Commission.

“We sincerely appreciate the professional, diligent approach taken by all the reviewing bodies and the tremendous support we’ve received throughout this process,” said Ralph V. Izzi Jr., Vice President of Public Affairs for Procaccianti Companies. “We’re excited to deliver a world-class property that honors Newport’s legacy and supports its future.”

Set to rise on the site of the Bellevue Gardens retail plaza, The Bellevue Hotel pays homage to the Stone Villa, a grand Italianate manor once located there. The original villa, built in 1833 by Scottish stonemason Alexander McGregor and once owned by publisher James Gordon Bennett Jr., stood directly across from the Newport Casino—now home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The new hotel, designed by Centerbrook Architects, draws inspiration from that architectural lineage. Plans include a full suite of luxury amenities—restaurant, spa, pub, gym, and interior open-air gardens—along with underground parking, widened sidewalks, and improved pedestrian areas to create a welcoming gateway to Bellevue Avenue.

“This project reflects the elegance and spirit of a bygone era while meeting the needs of today’s travelers,” said Paul Hitselberger, Executive Vice President of Operations & Asset Management for TPG Hotels & Resorts, which will manage the property. “The Bellevue will deliver a guest experience unmatched in the region.”

Groundbreaking is scheduled for late 2025, with a grand opening anticipated in 2027.
