America’s Cup Hall of Fame Challenge Set for Newport This October

The Herreshoff Marine Museum and America’s Cup Hall of Fame have announced the 2025 America’s Cup Hall of Fame Challenge, a high-stakes sailing showdown set for Oct. 4–5 in Newport.

The event will feature four elite teams racing aboard historic 12-Metre yachts—Columbia (US-16), Weatherly (US-17), Nefertiti (US-19), and American Eagle (US-21)—all with storied roles in America’s Cup history. Two of the yachts are former Cup champions. Races will take place just north of the Pell Bridge on Narragansett Bay.

“This will be a weekend of fierce competition, camaraderie, and a shared passion for the sport,” said Bill Lynn, president of the Herreshoff Museum. “It celebrates the legacy of America’s Cup racing and supports our STEM education programs.”

Each 10-person team will rotate boats between races and will be joined by a boat captain, two professional crew members, and an America’s Cup Hall of Fame inductee—offering sailors a rare chance to compete alongside legends.

“These four boats are an important part of the America’s Cup history in Newport,” said Hall of Famer and 1977 America’s Cup winner Gary Jobson, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies. “I’m looking forward to watching them battle it out once again on Narragansett Bay.”

The weekend will kick off with an opening reception Friday at The Sailing Museum and conclude with an awards celebration Sunday at the Clarke Cooke House’s Sky Bar.

Each team will contribute a $10,000 entry fee, supporting Herreshoff’s STEM programs and scholarships for aspiring sailors and boatbuilders from underserved communities.
