Indie rockers @illiteratelight are hitting the roa Indie rockers @illiteratelight are hitting the road in the most literal way possible — on bikes. The Harrisonburg, Virginia-based duo is teaming up with @newportfolkfest and climate nonprofit @11thhourracing to launch the Road to Newport, a 600-mile bike-powered tour with a purpose: push pedal-powered sustainability into the national spotlight.

Starting July 7 at Pale Fire Brewing in their hometown, Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran will pedal their way north, stopping for fan-powered shows at Baltimore’s Union Craft Brewing (July 13) and Danny Clinch’s Transparent Clinch Gallery in Asbury Park, NJ (July 18), before rolling into the sold-out Newport Folk Festival on July 26. There, they’ll once again unleash their now-legendary bike-powered stage — a fan-fueled rig that generates electricity from stationary bikes ridden by the audience.

It’s more than a gimmick. The duo’s stage first debuted at Newport in 2022 with backing from 11th Hour Racing and quickly became a symbol of action — and a crowd favorite. This year, Illiterate Light is doubling down, merging performance art with climate advocacy by literally embodying the sustainable transportation they preach.

The tour supports Newport Folk Festival’s growing green initiatives, including composting, water refill stations, and a booming bike valet system. Thanks in part to Illiterate Light’s visibility, nearly 20% of attendees are expected to arrive by bike this year.

For Illiterate Light, the tour is about building a movement — not just a setlist.

A thrilling new event is set to make waves in Rhod A thrilling new event is set to make waves in Rhode Island’s coastal waters this summer. On August 9, the inaugural @oceanstatecrossing will challenge paddlers and rowers from across the country with a 15-mile open-water race stretching from Fort Adams in Newport Harbor to George’s of Galilee in Narragansett.

Participants will tackle the coastal course using prone or stand-up paddleboards, surfskis, ocean kayaks, and coastal rowing crafts. Along the way, they’ll pass iconic landmarks such as the Newport Bridge, Castle Hill, Beavertail Lighthouse, Narragansett Towers, and Point Judith Lighthouse.

Part endurance challenge, part tribute to ocean culture, the event is the latest addition to the Summer Safe Ocean State Race Series, a mission-driven initiative founded by longtime Rhode Island lifeguard Brian Guadagno. The series promotes drowning and cancer prevention, cardiac health, and coastal sustainability. In 2024, the group raised $25,000 for these causes, including the placement of outdoor defibrillator stations at local beaches.

“This is an opportunity for Rhode Island to host athletes from all over the paddle community,” said Guadagno. “We’re grateful to our partners and excited to establish a long-lasting legacy event.”

Among the high-profile athletes participating is California’s Jack Bark, a world-renowned paddler and Florence Test Pilot. Bark recently broke records at the 2024 Catalina Classic and helped design the official Florence Marine X race jersey for the event.

Each athlete will receive a competitor pack valued at $250, including apparel and gear. To join, racers must raise $600 for the event’s causes, comply with U.S. Coast Guard safety rules, and provide their own transportation.

Registration is open through August 4. The race begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. on race day.

Sky Haneul Kim, chef at Gift Horse in Providence, Sky Haneul Kim, chef at Gift Horse in Providence, R.I., was named Best Chef: Northeast at the 2025 James Beard Foundation Awards, held Monday night in a star-studded ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Often dubbed the “Oscars of the food world,” the James Beard Awards honor the best chefs, restaurants, and culinary innovators across the U.S. Kim’s win places her among the elite in the industry and marks a major moment for Rhode Island’s dining scene.

@gifthorsepvd, a raw bar with South Korean influences, has quickly become one of Providence’s most talked-about destinations. Kim beat out a competitive field that included Avery Buck of May Day (VT), Brian Lewis of The Cottage (CT), Erin Miller of Urban Hearth (MA), and fellow Rhode Islander Derek Wagner of @nicksonbroadway.

This win makes Kim just the third chef from Rhode Island to take home a James Beard title and the second in the past three years—an impressive feat for the Ocean State.

Other Rhode Islanders were also in the spotlight. Nikhil Naiker of @nimki.pvd in Providence was a finalist for Emerging Chef, though the award went to Phila Lorn of Mawn in Philadelphia. @oberlin_pvd, also based in Providence, was in the running for Outstanding Restaurant, a category ultimately won by Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder, Colo.

Held in front of more than 1,500 guests, the 35th annual awards ceremony celebrated culinary excellence nationwide and underscored the growing influence of Rhode Island chefs on the national stage.
