Salve Regina Walks Off to NEWMAC Title, NCAA Bid With Win Over MIT

Top-seeded Salve Regina University capped a dominant run through the 2025 NEWMAC Baseball Championships with a dramatic 6-5, extra-inning victory over third-seeded MIT on Sunday, clinching an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Graduate student Tyler Petrosino delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th, singling to left center with the bases loaded to score Shane Williams, who led off the inning with a triple. The walk-off win at Reynolds Field gave the 10th-ranked Seahawks their 17th straight victory, tying a program record.

Salve Regina (32-7) completed a perfect 3-0 run through the conference tournament and will be making its sixth straight NCAA postseason appearance. The Seahawks made a deep run last year, advancing to the College World Series after winning both the regional and super regional.

Sunday’s final featured plenty of drama. After Salve jumped out to a 4-2 lead behind a two-run double from Christian Homa, MIT (19-20) tied it in the fifth with a two-run homer by Zev Moore — his team-leading 10th. The Engineers took a 5-4 lead in the sixth, but the Seahawks answered in the eighth when Petrosino’s bloop single scored Williams to tie it at 5.

Relievers James Tobin and Andrew Wertz held MIT scoreless over the final four innings, giving Salve the chance to win it in the 10th.

Salve Regina will learn its NCAA regional destination during the DIII Baseball Selection Show on Monday, May 12, at noon ET on NCAA.com.

This Mother’s Day championship was also a send-off for longtime MIT head coach Andy Barlow, who is retiring after 22 seasons at the helm.
