Aquidneck Island’s House of Representatives dele Aquidneck Island’s House of Representatives delegation expressed relief Tuesday after Brown University Health announced the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center at Newport Hospital will remain open through the next fiscal year.

“The birthing center is a critically important public health resource,” said Rep. Lauren H. Carson (D-Newport). “Many young families, including those without reliable transportation, depend on its pre- and postnatal care. The prospect of them having to travel 40 minutes or more off island was extremely alarming. We are grateful to hospital leaders and Brown University Health for recognizing its importance and committing to keep it open.”

Carson, along with Reps. Terri Cortvriend (D-Middletown, Portsmouth), Michelle McGaw (D-Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton), Marvin Abney (D-Newport, Middletown) and Alex Finkelman (D-Jamestown, Middletown), sent a letter last week urging hospital officials to reject a budget proposal to close the center. They warned the move would create hardships for low-income families and those at the Newport Naval base, while straining emergency services with long transports to out-of-town facilities.

Named for Newport philanthropist Noreen Stonor Drexel, the birthing center earned the World Health Organization and UNICEF’s “Baby Friendly” designation in 2004 for its support of breastfeeding and maternal care.

🔥 Heat Advisory in Effect Through Wednesday Eve 🔥 Heat Advisory in Effect Through Wednesday Evening for Southern New England 🔥

A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday for much of southern New England, with heat index values expected to reach up to 103 degrees.

The advisory covers all of Rhode Island except for Block Island. portions of northern Connecticut, and all of Massachusetts except for the east slopes of the Berkshires and Cape Cod and the islands.

Officials warn that the combination of high temperatures and humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents are urged to take precautions, including drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces, and avoiding prolonged time in direct sunlight.

Health experts recommend wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limiting strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours. People are also encouraged to check on relatives and neighbors, particularly the elderly and those without access to air conditioning.

Signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke include dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, confusion, and fainting. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

Authorities emphasize that staying cool and hydrated is critical during extreme heat events.

Brown University Health will keep the birthing cen Brown University Health will keep the birthing center at Newport Hospital open for at least one more year while it evaluates the facility’s long-term future, according to reporting from our good friends at @newportthisweek.

The announcement comes amid growing concern from residents and healthcare advocates over potential plans to close the center. Community members have warned that shutting down the unit would create significant gaps in maternal care on Aquidneck Island.

Thank God State Representative Lauren Carson stepped in to lead the fight!

The birthing center serves families across Newport County and surrounding communities, offering labor, delivery, and postpartum care. Local leaders have urged Brown University Health to recognize the hospital’s critical role in serving an island population with limited access to other maternity facilities.
