A drastic shift in the food and beverage industry A drastic shift in the food and beverage industry in Newport has been brewing since 2020. The changes are not all for the better. But there’s good news.

A handful of original restaurant ventures over the past decade stand out, their common theme to elevate the professional infrastructure of the restaurant business through local partnerships and improved employee opportunities and benefits, and to restore a sense of community, collaboration and belonging that places like Sig’s in the Fifth Ward used to represent.

Kevin and Nikki Garabedian are among this new generation of pioneers and as they get ready to launch their new breakfast and lunch spot, Ocean and Fifth, its location takes on a meaning of its own. The couple recently purchased the entire Sig’s property and recruited local wood worker and interior designer Charles Cooper of Rusted Wood to help them re-imagine the space. The menu includes a selection of upscale, healthy breakfast and lunch items, a bagel bar, Down East Coffee and more.

The couple built a successful real estate company in Nikki’s home state of MA, working toward their ultimate dream of a restaurant in Kevin’s hometown, Newport.

The goal is “a big family atmosphere,” where patrons can wander in any day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. An in-house baker, and 2 young chefs who completed the culinary course at Rogers High School then obtained degrees from Johnson and Wales, will helm the kitchen in a collaborative setting encouraging them to be creative and feel integral to the Ocean and Fifth family.

The space that previously housed art gallery and creative space The Kings Lens is now comfortable dining room where the same artful energy will be revived with guest chefs, pop-up dinners and other unique events.

Its name inspired by the intersection of RI and Newport’s Fifth Ward, @oceanandfifth Cafe will open its doors on March 1, giving the Garabedians less than two weeks before the Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade to get their feet wet. The AOH Pipe and Drum band will play a set as part of the opening day celebration!
