🚨 Rhode Islanders are in for a dangerously hot 🚨 Rhode Islanders are in for a dangerously hot and hazy day on Tuesday, June 24, as a combination of record-breaking heat and unhealthy air quality grips the state. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has issued an air quality alert, forecasting “UNHEALTHY” levels of ground-level ozone during the afternoon and evening, especially in southern parts of the state. At the same time, fine particles from wildfire smoke will push overall air quality to “MODERATE” statewide. To make matters worse, temperatures are expected to soar. Providence is forecast to hit 102°F, while Newport will see highs near 94°F, with heat index values up to 110°F. These “feels like” temperatures are among the highest so far this year. Health concerns High ozone levels can irritate the throat, trigger coughing, cause chest tightness, and make breathing difficult — particularly for children, older adults, and people with asthma or chronic lung conditions. The extreme heat also increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for those without air conditioning or who work outdoors. According to Scientific American, extreme heat is the leading weather-related cause of death in the U.S., killing more people annually than hurricanes, floods, or tornadoes. How to stay safe Officials urge residents to take precautions, including: * Staying indoors in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible * Limiting outdoor activity during the afternoon and early evening * Drinking plenty of water * Taking frequent breaks if working or exercising outside * Monitoring for signs of heat-related illness or respiratory distress Those with asthma or other respiratory issues should follow their care plans and keep quick-relief medications handy. Early morning is the safest time for outdoor activity, when temperatures and ozone levels are typically lower. This intense heat is part of a broader heat wave affecting the Northeast. Relief is expected to arrive gradually across New England starting Thursday. #heatwave #rhodeisland #newportri #newportbuzz
