Congress approves $1.9 trillion COVID relief package, sending bill to President Biden

House Democrats passed a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill on Wednesday, sending the stimulus plans to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature. The House gave final approval of the package on a near party-line 220-211 four days after the Senate passed the bill without any Republican votes. One Democrat — Representative Jared Golden of Maine — joined all Republicans in voting against the measure.

“We have acted with the urgency this pandemic demands, while following every House rule and proper procedure required for a budget reconciliation package,” House Budget Committee Chairman John Yarmuth of Kentucky said Wednesday. “We promised relief. The president promised relief and now help is on the way.”

“This isn’t a rescue bill, it isn’t a relief bill. It’s a laundry list of left-wing priorities that predate the pandemic,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California.

Biden is expected to sign the measure on Friday afternoon which provides $1,400 direct payments to most americans, extends emergency unemployment benefits, and sends $350 billion in aid to state and local governments and $14 billion for vaccine distribution.
