Back in the day, when Easton’s Beach still had a Back in the day, when Easton’s Beach still had a carousel, before the lively Atlantic Beach Club next door was taken over by a seemingly vacant wedding factory, when Castle Hill was still fun, and when the original Christie’s was in full swing, the Mudslide—a subversively boozy adult milkshake—was the totem beverage of the times.

Most of the recipes for the frothy drink call for a cocktail shaker, but in Newport, we did them frozen. Still do. I hadn’t ordered one in a while, but a recent revisit was like a reunion with a favorite, mischievous high school friend. As I write this, it’s 93 degrees. Let’s go get one.

Start right in the middle of the action on America’s Cup Ave., at @surfclubneport’s summer bar and sidewalk patio. The people-watching here is a marvel, so you can sip your ‘slide slowly and avoid brain freeze (though tough New Englanders consider it part of the experience). I can’t promise that slow-mo will work with their Dirty Banana Mudslide, which adds banana rum to the equation. You’re sucking that one down way too fast.

The wharves are another great place to get your ‘slide on. The patio bar at @theblackpearlrestaurant flanking the docks, is a mandatory cocktail stop for all who wander the harbor front, and they’ve got a frozen drink machine filled to the brim with Mudslides, ready and waiting. Across the way, at the end of Bowen’s Wharf, is @lobsterbarnewport, whose waterfront dining room and bar have daiquiris, piña coladas, and Mudslides, also at the ready.

Take a boat to your Mudslide on either the Newport Harbor Shuttle or the Jamestown Ferry. Hop off at Goat Island and walk a few hundred yards to the island shack-style @marinacafeandpub, legendary for its Mudslides. Order one and watch the boats go by while you slurp.

Heading north from Newport, the arguable pinnacle of Mudslide madness can be found at @gulfstreambar in Portsmouth, where you can take your brain freeze with the Nutella or peanut butter option. Hurts so good.

A zebra at Roger Williams Park Zoo has died follow A zebra at Roger Williams Park Zoo has died following a tragic accident during the storm on the evening of July 3.

Samantha, a 24-year-old Plains zebra and longtime resident of the zoo, reportedly panicked during the storm and collided with a fence in her holding area. The zoo confirmed that a necropsy determined she died instantly from the impact.

“This was truly a tragic accident, and our Zoo family is heartbroken by this sudden and unexpected loss,” zoo officials said in a statement.

Samantha had been part of the @rwpzoo since 2003 and was well known for her gentle but shy demeanor. She shared a strong bond with her companion Tundra, and the zoo’s two remaining zebras — Tundra and Zipper — are being closely watched by veterinary and animal care teams as they cope with the loss.

Zoo staff and visitors alike are mourning the passing of the zebra, who had become a fixture at the Providence attraction over the past two decades.

Samantha’s death marks a somber moment for the zoo, which emphasized its commitment to supporting the emotional and physical well-being of the remaining herd members.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. — After more than four decades o PAWTUCKET, R.I. — After more than four decades of serving the Pawtucket community, the iconic Modern Diner is officially on the market.

Housed in a rare 1940s Sterling Streamliner and known for its classic charm and famous breakfast specials, the Modern Diner has been a culinary and cultural institution since it was founded in 1985 by Nick Demou and his late father, Arthur Demou. It was the first diner in the nation to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“This is a bittersweet decision,” said Nick Demou. “The Modern Diner has been part of our family for generations and we’ve loved every moment of serving our neighbors, watching families grow, and being a source of comfort and nostalgia.”

The @moderndiner gained national recognition when it was featured on Food Network’s “Top 5 Diners,” noted for its Custard French Toast and welcoming atmosphere.

“This is an exciting time for the City of Pawtucket,” Demou added. “With new investments, developments, and attention coming into the area, we hope the next owner of the Modern Diner will be just as enthusiastic about this dynamic community and contributing to its future.”

“The iconic and beloved Modern Diner is part of the very fabric of Pawtucket,” said Mayor Donald Grebien. “Generations of families have enjoyed the Modern Diner’s delicious breakfasts and friendly service. I want to thank the Demou family for 40 years of running this wonderful establishment, and I wish them the best.”

The diner will remain fully operational during the transition, with the family continuing to oversee day-to-day operations.

The sale includes the Sterling Streamliner diner car, the business, real estate, and community goodwill. Interested buyers can contact Brian LaFauci at Won Strategy at (401) 533-3991.
