Travelers in the U.S. can now keep their shoes on Travelers in the U.S. can now keep their shoes on at airport security.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Tuesday that the Transportation Security Administration is officially ending the long-standing requirement for passengers to remove their shoes at domestic airport checkpoints.

The change, which takes effect immediately, is part of a broader effort by the Department of Homeland Security to modernize air travel and reduce wait times.

“Ending the ‘shoes-off’ policy is the latest effort DHS is implementing to modernize and enhance traveler experience across our nation’s airports,” Noem said during a press conference at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. “We expect this change will drastically decrease passenger wait times at TSA checkpoints.”

The policy was introduced in response to the 2001 attempted bombing by Richard Reid, the so-called “shoe bomber,” and became mandatory nationwide in 2006. Passengers between ages 12 and 75 were required to remove their shoes before passing through security screening.

TSA says recent improvements in security screening technology allow the agency to detect threats without requiring travelers to take off their shoes. The agency emphasized that other elements of its layered security process—such as identity verification, Secure Flight vetting, and baggage screening—remain in place.

While the policy change applies to standard TSA screening, some passengers may still be asked to remove their shoes if additional screening is needed. Travelers with TSA PreCheck have already enjoyed this exemption for years.

The announcement follows other recent TSA updates, including a new program offering expedited access for military families and a growing nationwide compliance with REAL ID requirements.

Noem said DHS is continuing to review other airport screening procedures with an eye toward improving the passenger experience while maintaining strong security measures.

Travelers have spoken — and Rhode Island’s own Travelers have spoken — and Rhode Island’s own T.F. Green International Airport has taken the crown.

In Travel + Leisure’s 2025 World’s Best Awards, readers ranked the Warwick airport the No. 1 airport in the country, beating out hubs in Portland, Indianapolis, and Minneapolis. The magazine praised T.F. Green for turning a typically stressful part of travel into something smooth and — dare we say — enjoyable.

“I love T.F. Green. Easy to get to, easy to park, easy to navigate,” one reader said. Others highlighted the short security lines, quick check-ins, and overall clean, comfortable layout. “Security is a breeze, even during a busy time,” another wrote.

The airport, which served just over four million passengers in 2024, saw less than half the foot traffic of mega-hubs like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, which had more than nine million. But for many travelers, that’s a plus.

Readers said they’re willing to drive longer distances to skip the chaos of big-city airports and fly from T.F. Green instead. Convenient public transportation to both Rhode Island and Massachusetts sweetens the deal.

Other perks include affordable parking, on-site dining options, and a layout that’s easy to navigate. It’s a far cry from the sprawling terminals and long waits found elsewhere.

The full top five list includes:
1. Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport – Warwick, RI (Score: 84.90)
2. Portland International Airport – Portland, OR (82.44)
3. Indianapolis International Airport – Indianapolis, IN (82.07)
4. Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport – Minneapolis, MN (81.66)
5. Detroit Metropolitan Airport – Detroit, MI (80.88)

For T.F. Green, it’s a first-time win — and a moment of pride for the Ocean State.
