Newport’s international reputation nearly got tr Newport’s international reputation nearly got trashed last month when three city councilors — Steph Smyth, Xay Khamsyvoravong, and Ellen Pinnock — tried to kill the city’s Sister City program.

The trio’s tone-deaf move would have severed decades of cultural exchange, scrapped the student exchange program, and insulted Newport’s partners in Ireland, Japan, Italy, Greece, Canada, and the Azores. Critics slammed the scheme as petty, reckless, and embarrassing.

Mayor Charlie Holder, along with Councilors Lynn Ceglie, Jeanne-Marie Napolitano, and David Carlin, stood firm and voted to save the program from what many called a shameful act of cultural vandalism.

To make sure our friends abroad knew where Newport really stands, Newport Buzz recently traveled to Kinsale, Ireland — the heart of the Sister City program. There, we met with Michael Frawley at his legendary @whitehousekinsale Hotel, Bar & Restaurant, which is absolutely decked out in Newport memorabilia. From floor to ceiling, the space celebrates the bond — proof that Kinsale takes this relationship seriously, even if a few councilors back home don’t.

We capped the visit with a toast at his bustling Fifth Ward Bar, sending a clear message: Newport honors its global friendships, no matter what three short-sighted politicians tried to do.

The Newport–Kinsale connection, officially sealed on Oct. 19, 1999, under the leadership of the late Rep. Paul Crowley, Mayor Robert McKenna, Congressman Patrick Kennedy, and local leaders, has blossomed into a vibrant exchange of culture, cuisine, and collaboration between harbor masters, firefighters, police, and schools.

Today, Newport counts six Sister Cities: Kinsale, Shimoda (Japan), Imperia (Italy), Ponta Delgada (Azores), Skiathos (Greece), and St. John (New Brunswick, Canada).

Bottom line? Three councilors tried to torch Newport’s global reputation. They failed. Newport — and Newport Buzz — made sure of it.

A Rhode Island assistant attorney general who was A Rhode Island assistant attorney general who was arrested earlier this month in Newport has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of willful trespass.

Devon Hogan Flanagan, 34, appeared in 2nd Division District Court on Wednesday and received a six-month filing, meaning the charge can be dismissed if she stays out of trouble during that time. She was also ordered not to return to the Clarke Cooke House restaurant on Bannister’s Wharf, where the incident took place on Aug. 14.

Flanagan was represented by Kevin Hagan, a prominent Newport trial lawyer.

Police said Flanagan refused to leave the Clarke Cooke House after being asked by staff. Body-worn camera video released after the arrest showed her repeatedly telling officers, “I’m an AG,” and warning, “You’re gonna regret this,” before being handcuffed and placed into a cruiser.

Attorney General Peter Neronha announced Monday that Flanagan had been placed on six months of unpaid leave.

“Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan mistreated the Newport Police Department and embarrassed herself, the office, and frankly me,” Neronha said in a statement. “We hold our attorneys to the highest personal and professional standards, and Ms. Flanagan plainly did not meet those standards here.”

Flanagan has worked for the Attorney General’s Office for about seven years and is currently assigned to the Appellate Unit of the Criminal Division.

On a lightly breezy and clear Sat. afternoon in mi On a lightly breezy and clear Sat. afternoon in mid-August, four of us are sitting at a table on a lovely stone patio with sweeping ocean views, sipping pear Cosmos, IPAs, and spritzes, and observing as @seacraftri’s Chef Troy Turcotte (@cheftroyturcotte) and bartender Conor Keating (@c_keat12) stroll down the steps and across the street to the beach wall to lean and confer—the norm, we learn. This chef is practically inhaling sea inspo at every meeting. It shows.

Sea Craft fronts the seasonal @shorehouseri but is independent and open year-round. Its mind-bending view is matched by a creative but approachable menu built with quality ingredients and a warm and all-pro staff.

The inviting, multi-level exterior and charming, airy interior were imagined by local, award-winning designer Libby Slader, also responsible for the design at James Beard Award-nominated Giusto in Newport. The building’s history includes secret tunnels used during Prohibition.

The menu pays respect to New England cuisine, with a spin. Seafood stands out, but everything Turcotte’s putting out is quality: Faroe Island salmon, Wagyu meatballs, organic Statler chicken, prime beef.

Order some raw bar with your drinks (how can you not?) and a plate of Togarashi popcorn chicken with yuzu aioli and pickled cucumber, the ultimate cocktail nibble. Turcotte’s beautifully balanced dishes include salmon crudo with grapefruit, avocado crema, chili oil, and Fresno chili.

Sea Craft uses strictly cod for both fish and chips and fish sandwiches. The thick, white, sweet, flaky fillet is perfectly battered for crunch, greaseless, topped with smoky chipotle tartar sauce, pickled red onions, lettuce, tomato, and hand-cut golden fries.

Turcotte fries in beef tallow and seed-free oils and works with fresh, never-frozen seafood and organic and farm-raised meat and produce. Miso-seared tuna, pink vodka chicken parm, margarita pizza, and gorgeous fish and chips are among fan faves, but Turcotte changes the menu often, keeping it fresh and fun.
