Few places celebrate America’s birthday with the Few places celebrate America’s birthday with the pride and reverence of Newport, and this year’s Fourth of July festivities promise to be especially meaningful as the city honors its vital role in the nation’s founding.

On Friday, July 4, the Newport Historical Society will open the doors of the Colony House — the fourth oldest statehouse in the country — for a stirring tribute to American independence. The celebration is part of a multi-year initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, continuing through 2026.

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., the public is invited inside the storied halls of the Colony House. At 11 a.m., the Sons of the Revolution will bring history to life with a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence from the building’s front steps — echoing the same words first heard by colonists nearly two and a half centuries ago.

At 11:30 a.m., Washington Square will thunder with the sounds of freedom as the Artillery Company of Newport fires a traditional 21-gun salute, a ceremonial reminder of the hard-fought battle for liberty.

Later in the day, beginning at noon, the Colony House will reopen for self-guided tours, offering visitors a chance to walk through the same chambers where Rhode Island leaders once debated independence and charted a path to revolution.

“The Road to Yorktown began here in Newport,” said Rebecca Bertrand, executive director of the Newport Historical Society. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, there’s no better place to reflect on our past and celebrate our freedom.”

Come early, bring your patriotism, and experience Independence Day where history lives.

Oyster farming is a significant industry in Rhode Oyster farming is a significant industry in Rhode Island & that’s good news for our waters. Oysters filter up to 50 gallons of water per day, improving water quality, increasing fishing habitats & lowering the effect of nutrient influx from land. The state is home to more than 50 oyster farms & 3 dozen tasty varieties.

Any discussion of oysters starts and ends with beloved @perryraso, oyster farmer and owner since 2002 of the Matunuck Oyster Farm and @matunuckoysterbar, the restaurant that tragically burned to the ground just before Memorial Day. While it’s being fully rebuilt, they’re back starting July 1 with outdoor dining under a beautiful new tent, offering dine-in service and grab-and-go meals.

@aquidneckislandoysters is a family-run farm on the Sakonnet River that produces its own briny, bright oysters—Aquidneck Cups—with deep, scalloped shells. In addition to supporting RI’s maritime future, they sell online, deliver locally, & pop up at breweries & events.

It’s in the name, & @midtownoysterbar doesn’t disappoint. Stocked with as many as a dozen varieties of oysters daily, a seat at the dedicated raw bar is a seafood lovers paradise. You’ll also find Oysters Rockefeller & Oyster Ceviche here.

Raw Bar Night at @rejectsbeerco is every Thurs. from 4 to 8:30 p.m. A rotating slate of $2 oysters & $2.75 shrimp cocktail are the perfect sidekicks to a frothy brew.

Newport’s favorite raw bar king, James Smith, formerly of Scales & Shells, can be found at @hookednewport, shucking up a variety of bivalves nightly. The seafood-focused menu also features fried oysters & Oysters Rockefeller.

@tavernonbroadway serves oysters & oyster shooters daily. Wed. is Buck-a-Shuck night, but serious raw bar seekers might want to consider The Big Shuck, a steal at $60 for 12 oysters, 6 littlenecks & 4 shrimp.

While the sourdough pizza & house made gelato are the obvious draw, a welcome surprise at @motherpizzeria is a fab raw bar selection to start you off light. Build your own ice tray with a rotating variety of local oysters & other seafood fresh from Narragansett Bay & beyond.
