NEWPORT, R.I. — Newport residents are invited to NEWPORT, R.I. — Newport residents are invited to take in one of the city’s most sweeping views on Veterans Day as the Miantonomi Park tower opens to the public Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The free event is being hosted by the City of Newport, the Miantonomi Park Commission, and the Aquidneck Land Trust to honor the tower’s legacy as a memorial to veterans of World War I.

Completed in 1929, the 100-foot stone tower was designed by architect William Kendall of the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White. It sits atop one of Newport’s highest natural points, making it a prominent landmark in the city’s landscape.

Inside, visitors will climb interior stone steps that lead to a narrow metal staircase ascending to the open-air observation deck. On a clear day, those who make the climb may catch views stretching as far as Providence and Block Island.

The event is open to adults and families. Children must be accompanied by an adult due to the steep and confined climb inside the tower.

Organizers say the opening offers both a moment of reflection and an opportunity to explore one of Newport’s most historic — and scenic — landmarks.

Five people, including three residents from Newpor Five people, including three residents from Newport, were rescued Thursday after their sailboat began taking on water and sank off the coast of North Carolina, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The group had been traveling aboard the Magic Bus, a sailboat based in Stonington, Connecticut, and was en route to the Bahamas when the vessel started flooding about 260 nautical miles offshore Cape Hatteras. All five individuals abandoned the boat and boarded their life raft before calling for help.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders received the distress call and directed multiple rescue assets to the area. The Coast Guard Cutter Angela McShan, along with a HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, were launched to locate the survivors.

Because of the long distance from shore, the Coast Guard coordinated with the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush to provide refueling support for the Jayhawk helicopter during the mission.

The HC-130 crew located the life raft and confirmed that all five people were in stable condition. The Jayhawk helicopter crew then hoisted the survivors from the raft and transported them safely back to Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City. No injuries were reported.

The Magic Bus sank and could not be recovered.
