State Rep. Lauren H. Carson is leading the push to State Rep. Lauren H. Carson is leading the push to stop Brown University Health from closing the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center at Newport Hospital.

In a letter signed by all five Aquidneck Island state representatives, including Terri Cortvriend, Michelle McGaw, Marvin Abney, and Alex Finkelman, the group urges hospital leaders and Brown University Health to keep the birthing center open and hold a public hearing on the island before making any final decisions.

The birthing center, which opened in 1995 and was named after Newport philanthropist Noreen Stonor Drexel, received the World Health Organization and UNICEF’s “Baby Friendly” designation in 2004 for its support of breastfeeding and maternal care.

The lawmakers argue that the closure would significantly impact women, infants, and families across Newport County, particularly low-income households and those without transportation who would be forced to travel off-island for prenatal and delivery services.

In the letter, the legislators point to the large number of young families stationed at the Newport Naval base who rely on the birthing center and cite increased state funding for hospitals as part of the recently enacted state budget. That includes $38 million in additional hospital reimbursements and direct support, along with more than $40 million in added funds for primary care.

Nearly 200 residents and healthcare professionals packed Newport City Hall this week as the City Council passed a resolution opposing the closure. While Newport Hospital Foundation Board Chair Carol Bazarsky addressed the council, Brown University Health Executive Vice President Sarah Frost and Newport Hospital President Dr. Tenny Thomas — the letter’s recipients — did not attend.

The lawmakers have requested that Frost and Thomas hold a public hearing in Newport in August to hear directly from island residents affected by the proposed closure.

Ozzy Osbourne, the godfather of heavy metal and on Ozzy Osbourne, the godfather of heavy metal and one of rock’s most enduring figures, has died at age 76, his family confirmed Tuesday.

The singer passed away “surrounded by love,” according to a statement shared with The Sun. “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.”

His death comes just two weeks after an emotional farewell concert at Villa Park in Birmingham, England—his hometown—where he performed seated on a throne alongside Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Osbourne told fans during the set, widely considered his final bow.

Born John Michael Osbourne on Dec. 3, 1948, in Birmingham, he earned the nickname “Ozzy” in primary school. He skyrocketed to fame in the 1970s as the lead singer of Black Sabbath, helping pioneer a new era of heavy music with anthems like “Paranoid,” “War Pigs,” and “Iron Man.”

Osbourne launched a successful solo career in the 1980s and became a pop culture phenomenon in the 2000s thanks to MTV’s The Osbournes, which offered a chaotic, endearing look at his family life.

His health had declined in recent years following a 2019 fall and a 2020 diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.

A two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and five-time Grammy winner, Osbourne leaves behind a legacy that spans generations of fans and musicians.

He is survived by his wife Sharon and five children: Jack, Kelly, Aimee, Louis, and Jessica.

Rising above the Farm Coast on a commanding hillto Rising above the Farm Coast on a commanding hilltop, 155D West Main Road is a bold vision of modern coastal living — where sculptural architecture meets natural elegance in a home designed to both frame and elevate its spectacular setting.

This 6,049-square-foot Coastal Brutalist estate was meticulously crafted to capture panoramic views of the Sakonnet Passage from nearly every angle. Defined by clean lines, soaring volumes, and an elemental material palette, the residence is as much a work of art as it is a home.

Teak wall cladding, Douglas fir ceilings, and terrazzo floors bring warmth and texture to the modern silhouette. The chef’s kitchen is outfitted with a White Carrara marble island, teak cabinetry, and Sub-Zero and Viking appliances — a seamless fusion of form and function.

The primary suite is a study in serene luxury, with floor-to-ceiling glass, spa-style Linac marble floors, a floating teak vanity, and a custom teak dressing room. Two upper-level bedrooms are wrapped in dual-aspect glass and finished with integrated birch built-ins. A luxe bath on this level features Montauk slate and a floating birch vanity.

Exceptional amenities include a state-of-the-art six-seat theater, three fireplaces, a Sonos sound system, smart home integration, and a four-car garage. Outdoor features include a stone-walled vegetable garden, four-bedroom septic system, generator, and deeded water access.
