PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence police said early Su PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence police said early Sunday they have arrested a person of interest in the deadly shooting that tore through the Brown University campus on Saturday afternoon. Officials are expected to release additional details at a 7 a.m. briefing.

Authorities said the gunman entered Barus and Holley, an engineering building, around 4 p.m. and opened fire on students studying for final exams. Two students were killed and at least nine others were wounded, according to police.

Brown University President Christina Paxson said all 11 victims were students. None had been publicly identified as of early Sunday. Police reported that six victims remained in critical but stable condition, one was in critical condition, one was stable, and one had been treated and released.

The shooting prompted an hours-long shelter-in-place order across the campus and nearby neighborhoods as police and first responders flooded the area.

At 5:42 a.m., the university posted an updated alert: “Providence police have advised the University that the shelter in place order has ended for the entire Brown campus. However, police activity continues in areas that are still considered an active crime scene. Be advised that access to these areas of campus continues to be limited.”

The arrest marks a significant step in an investigation that has drawn local, state, and federal law enforcement to Providence as the university community confronts one of the most violent incidents in its history. Authorities have not said what led them to the person detained, nor whether they anticipate additional suspects.

Providence Police late Saturday night released sur Providence Police late Saturday night released surveillance video of the suspected gunman in the deadly Brown University classroom shooting, as hundreds of law enforcement officers continue an urgent manhunt across the city.

The brief video clip shows a male dressed in all black walking away from the building. His face is not visible, and no weapon is shown. Investigators said the footage is the most significant lead they have so far and are asking anyone who can identify the suspect to contact authorities immediately.

Witnesses told Providence Police that the suspect may have been wearing a gray camouflage mask.

More than 400 officers from the Rhode Island State Police, the FBI, the ATF, and local departments across Rhode Island and Massachusetts are now assisting with the search and investigation.

Gov. Dan McKee said he has spoken with both President Donald Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel, who pledged federal resources and full support for the ongoing response.

The shooting occurred inside a Brown University classroom around 4:20 p.m., killing two and injuring nine members of the campus community. Officials have confirmed that all victims were affiliated with Brown, though additional details have not yet been released.

A shelter-in-place order remains in effect for the university and surrounding neighborhood as police continue to sweep buildings and track leads.
