USGA Announces Qualifying Sites on Path to 2024 U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced the qualifying sites for the highly anticipated 44th U.S. Senior Open Championship. This prestigious event is set to take place at the historic Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island, from June 27 to June 30. Newport Country Club, one of the founding clubs of the USGA, will host its inaugural Senior Open, marking its fifth USGA championship.

Qualifying rounds, conducted over 18 holes, will be held at 33 locations across the United States between May 13 and June 5. As of now, online entry applications are being accepted, with registration continuing until Wednesday, May 1, at 5 p.m. EDT on champ-admin.usga.org.

USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer expressed enthusiasm about bringing the Senior Open to Rhode Island for the first time. Newport Country Club holds a special place in history, having hosted the USGA’s inaugural championship in 1895. Bodenhamer emphasized the integral role Allied Golf Associations will play in conducting the qualifying process, aligning with the USGA’s core values.

Exempt players, who have already submitted entries, include the reigning 2023 champion Bernhard Langer, along with notable U.S. Senior Open champions such as Fred Funk, Kenny Perry, David Toms, and Padraig Harrington. U.S. Open champions Retief Goosen and Michael Campbell are also among the exempt players. The championship promises an exciting competition for the coveted Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy.

Among the notable qualifying sites, The Omni Homestead Resort’s Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va., stands out, hosting the qualifier for the 10th consecutive time. Other venues like Worthington Hills Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, and Wynlakes Golf and Country Club in Montgomery, Ala., will each host qualifying for the 10th time. California leads with the most qualifying sites at five, followed by four in Florida and three in Texas, with a total of 22 states participating.

The U.S. Senior Open has a rich history of producing competitive golf, and the 2024 edition will mark the 10th USGA championship contested in Rhode Island. To be eligible, players must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 2.4, be 50 years of age at the start of the championship proper, and either be an amateur or a professional golfer.

The 2024 U.S. Senior Open promises to be a thrilling event, building on the legacy of the past championships. Golf enthusiasts can find more information, including ticket details, on the official championship website at ussenioropen.com.
