Garrett F. Sullivan, age 75 of Portsmouth, RI and Largo, FL passed away peacefully at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, FL on Tuesday, May 2.

Born in Newport, RI on March 8, 1942, he was the son of the late John F. Sullivan (NFD) and Genevieve (Ritchie) Holden.

He graduated from De La Salle Academy in Newport in 1960 and enlisted in the United States Air Force, faithfully serving his country for 4 years.

Garrett joined the Newport Fire Department in 1965. He rose through the ranks of the department throughout his outstanding career as a firefighter/Fire Marshall and retired in 1993 as Chief of the Newport Fire Department after 28 years of dedicated service to the City of Newport.

Garrett loved being on the water, whether he was sailing in the Newport Yacht Club Summer Series or just relaxing on his sailboat at Fort Adams. He was most proud that he competed in the Bermuda 1-2 race twice.
He was a member of numerous civic organizations including the Newport Elks and the North End Club and coached 5th ward little league for many years including the first team to have female players.

He is survived by his son Garrett E. Sullivan (PFD) and wife Amy of Foster, RI, his wife of 16 years Susan Cooper of Portsmouth, RI, his former wife Patricia DiLucido of Cranston, RI, his sister JoAnn Burns and husband Brian of Portsmouth, RI and his brother Benton Holden and his wife Lita of Chesapeake, VA.

He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Cyrus and Magnolia Sullivan, Nora Conley and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Laura Sullivan.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held at the Eisenhower House, Fort Adams State Park, Newport RI on Monday, June 12 7-9PM.
