Providence Mayor Elorza Announces Creation of the Muslim-American Advisory Board

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza signed an executive order Tuesday that to create a Muslim-American advisory board for the city as part of an ongoing One Providence initiative.

“Providence and the State of Rhode Island were founded on the principles of religious liberty and tolerance,” said Mayor Jorge Elorza. “Today and every day, we uphold those principles by telling our community that no one gets left out, not a single resident gets left behind. This advisory board will work to ensure that the voices and concerns of our Muslim-American community are heard and that they are at the table with us every step of the way.”

The Muslim-American Advisory Board will be charged with:

• Creating a system that better serves and empowers the Muslim-American community in Providence
• Help guide Mayor Elorza’s policy decisions that affect Muslim-Americans in Providence by reviewing and discussing issues that directly and indirectly affect this community
• Enhance the understanding of the religion of Islam by encouraging dialogue and promoting mutual understanding amongst religions
